Why empty cottages fail in Cedarville
Most Cedarville places are used hard from Memorial Day through Labor Day, then again for a week of hunting, then not at all. Heat gets set to 50 and forgotten. Power blinks in a lake-effect night and the thermostat never comes back. Pipes fail on a Wednesday in February and run until May.
The water is the other problem. Cedarville sits on Lake Huron and the Les Cheneaux channels. Ice shoves cribs, docks, and standpipes. A November-fine boathouse can have a racked door and a sheared pipe after one wind event on the bay. Snow load and ice dams on the lake side are routine.
Snowmobile traffic on M-134 means the village is not deserted. Empty driveways still are. Mail in the box, no tracks, a dark interior: that is how a seasonal place reads from the road. Mice use the same empty months.
Island cottages launched from Cedarville have a third problem. Most of the 36 Les Cheneaux islands are boat-only. Once the channels freeze, you wait for safe ice or spring. A mainland Cedarville watch is a different job from a Marquette Island or La Salle Island watch. Tell us which one you have.

Do you watch island cottages or only mainland Cedarville?
Mainland and road-accessible places are standard. Boat-only Les Cheneaux islands are seasonal: water in the open months, safe ice only if conditions allow. Hill Island and Island No. 8 are reached from Hessel, not from the Cedarville marina.
We leave the heat off and blow the lines. Is watch still worth it?
Yes, if the building still has a roof, glass, and a door. Closing the water does not close out ice dams, broken windows, or a door that has been kicked.
