Why empty cottages fail in Hessel
Hessel is a marina town first. The Clark Township marina, the yacht-club water, and the private docks along Hessel Point sit on the ice line. Lake Huron ice rides up, piles, and shoves. Docks rack. Seawalls move. Standpipes shear. A winterized cottage still has a boathouse door and a shoreline that can be wrecked in one blow.
Hill Island is the local exception that owners get wrong. It is one of the few Les Cheneaux islands with a causeway and bridge, and Island No. 8 continues from there. You can drive. That does not mean the cottage is being watched. It means a thief can drive too, and it means freeze damage still happens behind a locked door. Marquette Island, across the channel and the largest island in the chain, is the opposite: boat or ice, no road. Do not assume a Hessel address tells us the access. Name the island.
Hessel has a thinner year-round footprint than Cedarville. After Snowsfest and the vintage sled crowd leave, it is a snowmobile pass-through, not a neighborhood watch. Mice, snow load on boathouse roofs, and a furnace that quit during a blink are the ordinary failures.
What we do here
Routine home watch. Heat, leaks, power, glass and doors, roof line, pests, and a look at the shoreline from the yard when ice is safe. We do not walk rotten ice.
Storm and freeze checks. Extra visits after ice, wind, and deep cold. Hessel Point and the island road take west wind off the open lake in a way downtown Cedarville does not.
Opening and closing. Spring water-on and fall water-off, with your plumber if the cottage needs more than a valve. Boatlift and dock timing is an add-on, not part of the $59 starting plan.
Key-holding and contractor meets. We meet the plumber, electrician, cleaner, or painter you already hired. We do not stain cedar or paint the lake side.

Can you get to Hill Island in winter?
If the causeway and bridge are open, yes. We still treat it as a Hessel-area property with island wind and ice, not as a city house.
What about Marquette Island?
Boat in open water. Ice only when it is actually safe, which is not every winter and not every week. Say so on the form. We will not sell a weekly winter plan we cannot physically run.
